Natural Wonders

The Blue Cave on the nearby island of Biševo has two entrances. One is smaller, artificially deepened, through which a paddle boat may pass. This entrance does not influence the cave lighting. The other entrance resembles a vault and is much wider. It is found on the south side of the cave, below sea level, and the sunlight penetrates through it. The Blue Cave makes the island a valuable tourist destination. Around noon, while the sea is calm, the sunrays enter through an undersea opening into the Blue Cave, reflect from the white bottom, and illuminate the cave with blue and objects in water with silver colour. Due to the cave’s shallow depth and underwater opening, it is suitable for all kinds of divers. It is 3 – 20 metres deep. The cave is geomorphologically very interesting and is an example of a typical limestone formation.

The Green Cave on Ravnik was named after unusual green light reflected in the sea which reaches through an opening in the ceiling of the cave. The cave may be accessed by a boat and swimming is permitted.

The Queen’s Cave is very hard to reach and only the really lucky ones find their way on first attempt. But it is worthy looking for since the cave is truly unusual and quite large. According to the stories, Teuta the Illyrian queen used to dwell in the cave, which consists of several rooms.

The underwater world surrounding the island of Vis is famous for a large number of archaeological sites and rich and diverse flora and fauna. Due to its distance from the mainland, the Vis sea is rich in fish, seashells and molluscs. Accompanied by experienced diving instructors, you may see amphorae, antique anchors and sunken ships. Due to numerous bays and its protruding position towards the open sea, Vis is also an attractive nautical centre on the Adriatic.

The Stiniva Bay is located in the south part of the island and is characterised by a very narrow entrance behind which the bay spreads and ends with a 30-metre wide beautiful pebble beach. Sideways, it is surrounded by 35-metre high steep cliffs. There is no road that leads to the bay so it managed to preserve its natural beauty.

The Taleška Bay is located on the southwest shore of the island of Vis. It is characterised by great depth, a small pebble beach at the end, and crystal clear sea.

The island of Palagruža is the most remote Croatian island. It is 40 kilometres southwest from the island of Vis. What distinguishes Palagruža from all other islands is a large number of natural features. Its climate is extremely dry and humidity very low. A special type of vegetation grows here due to such dry climate and the influence of sea and salt. Besides endemic plants, there are also different endemic animal species. In order to compensate for the lack of humidity, all these animals and plants, along with numerous other adjustments, use humidity that comes from dew, which is plentiful on Palagruža. The waters of Palagruža are one of the richest fishing areas in the Adriatic and a timeless destination of fishermen from Komiža.
